2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.
While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Frogs are anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their visibility has noticeably increased in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are bona fide Frog Games.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To quantify this phenomenon, I performed a detailed review into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The data paint a clear picture: a consistent uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is also evident elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the trend in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess natural appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues lend themselves to a wide array of unique mechanics.
Many of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
When these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
